Larry Winget included the above quote in his book It's Called Work for a Reason. The quote points out the wrong thinking of some employees. Here is a passage from the book:
Many workers believe the company is there to serve them, instead of the truth—they're there to serve the company. They have a sense of entitlement. This bothers me. Your company owes you a safe working environment. That's about it!
The company doesn't exist to make you happy. It exists to make a profit so you can be paid to serve customers and the company can remain profitable to pay you again. That's the cycle of business. Try to facilitate that cycle to the best of your ability.
Book: It's Called Work for a Reason by Larry Winget
- Do you agree with the viewpoint of the woman in the quote or the viewpoint of the author more? Why?
- If you were the woman, how would you have handled the situation?
- If you were the boss, how would you have handled the situation?

ReplyDelete1. I agree more with the opinion of the author because at work you should only focus on your job.
2. If I was the woman I would apoligize and put away my personal things.
3. If I was the woman I would handle everything the same way.
When it comes to the first question I don’t exactly agree but I don’t disagree either, I think if you are up to date on your work and have what you should have done I think you should be able to have some of your own personally work also. If I was the woman I would have pointed out that everything that she’s given me to do is up to date and that I was just taking a small break and will get back to work shortly, and if I was the boss I would have inquired if she’d had all her work done and go from there.

2.If i were the worker i would have calmly exited out of the pages and started to do my work.
3. If i were the boss i would have asked her to get off the website/page that she was on and to start doing her work.

ReplyDelete1. I agree with the author of the book, although it is her working desk she is working for the company and they have the right to tell her to get to work.
2. If I were the employee I would have politely put my personal things away appologized, and gotten back to work.
3.If I were the boss I would have given her one chance to get back to work and if she still didn't then I would have fired her too.

ReplyDelete1. There is a valid argument for each side of this, but I agree more with the viewpoint of the author more. I do because when you are at work, you should be doing what you are paid to do, work! It is not the time and place to be doing personal things, and I think the author did the right thing in that particular situation.
2. If I was the woman, and my opinion was that I should be allowed to do personal things at my desk, I would be extremely angry. I would likely go and talk to my boss’s boss about the unfair act which my boss did and try to get him/her to agree with me so I can do personal things and or get my boss fired.
3. If I was the boss, I would have done the exact same thing. I completely agree with what he did. If somebody thought that they could do personal things at their desk while they were at work, I would have done the same thing.

ReplyDelete1. I agree with the author more because we should know why we go to work which is to work and not to do anything else. Also, we should know that we work for a company so we should respect the place or position we have in a company.
2. If I was the woman, I would ask for forgiveness and tell my boss that I will follow the rules and know my limits.
3. If I was the boss, I would have handled it the same way this boss did because if an employee is not appreciative about his or her job, they do not deserve to work in that company.

3.I would have made it very clear to the women that she had 2 options, one being either clean up her act and work when at work, or two leave this work for a place that tolerates that.

ReplyDelete1.) I agree most with the author because the woman works for a company and the boss needs to know what his/her workers are doing and not getting into mischief.
2.) If I was the woman I would have listened to the guided rules in the first place and if I did do something like this I would apologize and ask for forgiveness.
3.) If I were the boss I would have asked my employee to kindly put their personal stuff away and if not there would be a consequence if it wasn't done in an orderly time.
1. I agree with the viewpoint of the author more. I agree with the author more because the women is at her job and needs to be doing work. She needs to be benefitting her company and earn the money she receives.
ReplyDelete2. If I were the woman I would have apologized to my boss so I could keep my job and told him it won’t happen again, or I would have explained why I was doing personal things at work to him and see if he understood.

1.I agree with the writer, for a few reasons. One, because yes it is technically her desk, but it is the boss’ company, so everything that happens, on or off her desk, is his business as well. Another reason is because she needs to earn the money she is making, not just have it handed to her.
2.If I was the woman, well for starters, I would have never talked to my boss that way. Secondly, I would be more than understanding as to why I was fired, but also a little flustered and irritated with myself

1. I agree with the viewpoint to the boss. She is there to work and help the corporation excel. She is not there to have free time and mind her own business. The company gave her that job therefore she has to respect that and do all she can to help.
2. If I was the woman I would ask for an explanation for the boss taking her job. It seems as if the woman does not understand why she would be fired for what she thinks it is not a big deal. I would also ask for a second chance to learn from my mistake and to build from it.
3. If I was the boss I would have not taken the level to extreme by firing her. Instead I would personally talk to her about the situation and confront her of what she did wrong. Not only does it hurt the company that they lost and employee, it hurts that woman’s family as well.

ReplyDelete1. I agree with the author more because a worker makes a commitment to the business when he or she accepts the job. They promise that they will do their best every day to make the company a better place and when a worker is busy with personal things, they are not fulfilling this promise.
2. If I were the woman I would have handled the situation much differently. Instead of replying with the comment it’s my desk I can do what I want I would have listened to my boss’s orders and put all my personal things away unless it was some sort of emergency situation that I needed to pay attention to.
3. If I were the boss I would have handled the situation a little differently. I would have first asked what the personal things were for and what the situation was. I believe that the author is in the right with his opinion. I’ve seen that “sense of entitlement” that most people have and it bothers me too. It irritates me so much because I live with a sister who thinks exactly like that. If I would have been that woman I wouldn’t have had that problem because I wouldn’t have been doing personal things at work. It’s called work for a reason, right? ReplyDelete2. If I was the women then I would have told my boss what I was doing when he asked, and if he said that I am not able to do so; I would stop.
3. If I was the boss then I would ask to see what she is doing. If she was texting a child to make sure they got home safely, I would be fine. If she told me none of your business then I would fire her; her attitude, as I see it, would not be tolerable and is a sign of disrespect.

ReplyDelete1.I agree with the author the employee should do personal things on her own time
2. I would have apologized and did my personal things after work.
3. I would have told the employee that she needs to get back to work. If she still was doing personal things when i came back i would have fired then.
Nick Nanney, Hour 5
ReplyDeleteI agree with the view point of the author because the employee shouldn’t have been doing her personal stuff at work instead of working.
If I was the employee I would have apologized and start working
If I was the boss I would fire her too.

ReplyDelete1. I agree with the authors because if the company wants you to do something within reason you should do it.
2. If I was the woman I would listen to the boss because they are in charge of my job.
3. If I was the boss I wouldn’t fire them right away. I would try to meet somewhere in the middle or warn her that if she keeps it up, you’re getting fired.
1.I agree with the viewpoint of the author because not all employees are in the right, but yes a work space is there for you to help the company earn and make more money, that’s why you’re paid. You’re not paid to do nothing, or to have the company serve you, but you’re paid to work and help in the company.
ReplyDelete2.I would have handled the situation by talking with higher management, and try to fix the problem so it wouldn’t happen again.
3.If I was the boss and one of my employees were doing this, I’d try to fix it but if it doesn’t work the person may lose their job because they aren’t doing what they are supposed to do.

ReplyDelete1) I agree with the view point of the author more. I think that there is a place for personal things- home, and a place for business things- work. If you need to something personal, do it at home, or ask permission to do it. You go to work to make money, not to do things that can wait until you get home.
2) If I were the woman, I would apologize to my boss and get back to work. If I desperately needed to handle something, then I would ask my boss in advance. I think that she should have been more understanding of the boss; he’s there for a reason. It IS his business on what you are doing at your desk- because you’re at WORK.
3) If I were the boss, I would try to reason with the employee on what my thoughts were. I would give her a warning and every time she did it again, something more sever would happen. If she did it more than 4 times, I would fire her. The company needs workers, not people who don’t follow orders.

ReplyDelete1. I agree with the author because if you work for a company, you should not bring personal business to the job. Especially not while you are supposed to be doing your work.
2. I would’ve just accepted it because I should’ve known not to be doing that anyways.
3. If I was the boss, I would’ve done the exact same thing and fired her.
1. I agree more with the author. I do believe your desk should have a few personal items, like pictures of your kids, but you shouldn't be doing your own things.
ReplyDelete2. If I was the woman I would've just stopped doing what I was doing, apologize, and then go back to work.
3. If I was the boss I would simply ask what she was doing and make sure it was appropriate or an emergency. If it was I would've told her it was fine. If she replied like that, I would've had a talk with her and make sure that she wouldn't go back off task. If after that she did something like that again and gave me attitude I would fire her.
1. Do you agree with the viewpoint of the woman in the quote or the viewpoint of the author more? Why? I agree with the author because she was doing something completely irrelevant to her job and you work for people not for yourself.
ReplyDelete2. If you were the woman, how would you have handled the situation?
I would probably take getting fired as a learning experience and learned to think before I were to speak.
3. If you were the boss, how would you have handled the situation?
I would have probably told her that if she doesn’t want to share than shes fired.

1.Do you agree with the viewpoint of the woman in the quote or the viewpoint of the author more? Why?
I agree with the author! It may be 'the womans' desk, but it is her desk to WORK at. When you go to work you are there to do your job, not handle personal things.
2.If you were the woman, how would you have handled the situation?
If i were the woman i would not have gotten an attitude with my boss. If i was working on something else i would have apologized and went back to doing my job. Though, I wouldnt have been doing personal things at my desk to begin with.
3.If you were the boss, how would you have handled the situation?
I think the boss could have given her a break, but i do not disagree with him either. If she had gotten an attitude with me I probably would have done the same thing that he did.
1. I agree with the author because she was placed in a business to work for the company not just do whatever she wanted and get paid for it that's just not how it works you have to physically do work to get money.
ReplyDelete2. If i were the woman in this situation i would do my work as i am suppose to and follow the company rules to keep my job.
3. if i were the boss i would probably fired her if she kept up what she was doing, but if she changed her attitude then she would be able to stay

1. I agree with the author’s point of view more because the employee did not have her priorities in order, she was doing things that are not related to her work.
2. If I was the employee I wouldn’t talk to my boss that way anyways, then I would apologize afterwards.
3. If I was the boss in the situation I would talk to her about what just happened. Then I would ask her to not do that again, but if she gets mouthy with me I would fire her.
Do you agree with the viewpoint of the woman in the quote or the viewpoint of the author more? Why? Yes that’s how the worls should be.
ReplyDeleteIf you were the woman, how would you have handled the situation? I would I would just do my work
If you were the boss, how would you have handled the situation? The way the normal person woul do give couple of chances than if there still doing it the fire them

ReplyDelete1. I agree with the author because, you are paid to do what the company wants you to do, not what you want to do.
2. If i was in the situation i would try to say sorry and get the job back and then yell at myself after one of us left.
3. If this was the first time I would let it go with a warning and if it was multiple times I would fire them.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the viewpoint of the author more. The job was assigned to that person and paid for a task to be done efficiently and timely; the employer is not there to pay you for sting around calling family and friends. If you was the woman I would not have used my phone to make a personal call unless it was emergency with a family member, and if someone told me to get back to work I would apogees and tell them the situation and get back to working as fast as possible. If I were the boss and my employee told me what she did from the book she would be fired , and if it was emergency I would understand and ask her to return to work as soon as it was handled.
